Any questions?

What is the Bank Street approach?

Bank Street (Developmental–Interaction) is a child-centered, play-rich model where children learn by doing—investigating real-world topics, collaborating with peers, and reflecting with teachers who closely observe and scaffold growth.

What subjects are emphasized?

Social studies is the “spine” of the curriculum. Literacy, math, science, and the arts are woven into thematic studies of community, ecology, history, and daily life so skills develop in meaningful contexts.

How is assessment done?

Primarily through observation, anecdotal records, work samples, and portfolios. Teachers track growth across domains (social, emotional, physical, cognitive, and ethical) rather than relying mainly on standardized tests.

What’s the teacher’s role?

Teachers design rich environments, pose authentic problems, model inquiry, and guide reflection. They differentiate through small-group work, materials choice, and open-ended tasks to meet diverse learners.

How is behavior and community handled?

Classrooms are democratic communities. Expectations are co-constructed; conflict is addressed with problem-solving talks, restorative practices, and classroom jobs/meetings that build responsibility and empathy.

How can families support Bank Street learning at home?

Invite real-world inquiry: cook together (measurement, procedure), map the neighborhood (spatial reasoning, community roles), interview relatives (oral history), visit local places, and keep a journal or portfolio of projects and reflections.
